Hello everyone!
Half of the year has just gone by, and we’re about to announce something that we’ve been working on in the background leading up to the end of July. It is a project that brings the voices and efforts of the island descendants together in unison that we’ve been eagerly waiting for.
Come 30 July, Sunday, we are gathering all to celebrate this day in honour of our narratives, cultures, heritage and traditions. A place we once called home, a place our ancestors once stood their ground and where their lives were built upon. Recognising these stories that have shaped our past, present and future, we’re putting all of this together on this meaningful day we call Panggilan Anak Pulau, which means ‘Calling From Island Descendants’.
This event is a precursor to something bigger, Hari Orang Pulau – a landmark event we are hosting next year, which sees an even wider range of collaborations and celebrations across island cultures.
Here’s a rundown of what’s going down on 30 July :
From 10am - 1pm at The Projector, Golden Mile Tower, it will be a three-hour session of talks by a lineup of esteemed speakers such as Dr Imran Tajudeen and Dr Hamzah Muzaini, and former Southern islanders and descendants sharing on maritime knowledge, livelihoods, urbanisation, myths, family, food, and a soulful performance by Asnida Daud, a descendant from Pulau Sudong. There will also be a screening of PULAU, a short film featuring Singapore's former islanders, directed by and courtesy of Stephanie Thong.
We will be dropping exclusive merchandise designed by the island descendants and a sumptuous meal of Bubur Lamuk Ikan Tenggiri (spiced porridge with mackerel) prepared by former islanders of Pulau Semakau. We are also hosting a mini photo exhibition featuring the Southern islanders and their traditions – it’ll be an enriching experience for all who have been curious about the islanders’ stories and their ways of life.
A sneak peek of what we’ve been working on - for your eyes only!
We are welcoming ALL to this event! We can't wait to bring our liveliness and jiwa laut (spirit of the sea) to the space. We'll have a great time exchanging stories that matter and create new ones to share with everyone else.
Tickets will go for $30 each, which grants you access to the talks, film screening, performance, a sumptuous bowl of Bubur Lambuk Ikan Tenggiri, an event tote bag and merchandise by Orang Laut SG designed by island descendants. All proceeds will go to supporting Hari Orang Pulau next year!
Call all your friends and family, and sign up for your tickets! Seats are limited. See you there!
